SNC News Term 1

SNC NEWS

This year, some of our students will report about what is happening in SNC and of course the S.N.C teaching team will also send updates, reminders and LC news. Our first three reporting teams are included in this email.

Geography
This year we have a teacher from Canada in SNC, who is teaching us about Geography. Being an expert about Canada we have begun with learning about Canada. Wendy showed us where Canada is on a world map. She lives in a place called Ontario. Wendy gave us the task of researching about Canada and we all have done a presentation about something related to Canada. We both did different investigations. Zahra did a powerpoint presentation based on snow and Maddy made a stop motion animation about beavers. Wendy gave everyone feedback about how accurate we were about what Canada is like. Wendy will be teaching us Geography all of this term. We can’t wait to see what we will do next.
Reporters: Maddy and Zahra.

Maths
investigating area
The year so far, has proven to be very intriguing. Even the students, who say they don’t like Maths, have been intrigued with our ‘Weetbix investigation’ which involves both Maths and Science. We know lots of kids have told their parents about the investigation and many students think about it when they are eating Weetbix for their breakfast. We have been discovering how thirsty Weetbix are using hot and cold milk and water. As well as measuring, we have been learning about nets, area and perimeter and graphs. The three of us have definitely enjoyed Maths this term and are looking forward to finding out what our next investigation will be.

Inter-school Sport
Inter-school sport is a great way for students to interact with and meet students from other schools. We had a choice about whether we wanted to participate or not. This term and part of next term, there are three different sports, Lacrosse, Tee Ball and Netball. Phoebe and I are in Netball. Our coach is Chiara. We had two weeks to practice before our first match against St Josephs P.S. The Lacrosse team has had professionals train them and teach them some strategies for the game. Peter is also their coach. They were excited about winning the first game. Tee Ball, is being coached by Bec.
The dance elective learning for the Merri Creek project
All the other students in SNC and Il Nido have been participating in an Electives Program. The electives are Dance, Optical Illusion Art, Line Drawing, Styx Animations, Planks Construction and Reader’s Theatre.
Reporters: Phoebe and Becky.

Resilience Program

This term we have implemented the ‘Building Resilience Program’ by the Reach Organization, designed for Primary Schools. The program includes defining resilience, exploring emotions and our emotional responses to situations, self- regulation and impulse control, strategies for dealing with problems, optimism, empathy and connecting to others. The students will also learn conflict resolution skills. Of course we will continue to build upon these skills and concepts throughout the year.
During Geography sessions, Wendy has talked about needing resilience when travelling and living in different places and Chris is making links in History sessions about the resilience demonstrated by many of our early explorers.

History
Chris is facilitating the European exploration of Australia. There has so far been a particular focus on James Cook. The students will soon begin their own research about an explorer of their choice and present to their group.

Year six program
This semester, the year six students will be involved in a program which covers three aspects: Personal growth, knowing themselves as learners, their strengths, communication and speaking skills etc, Academic Excellence; setting goals and developing in the areas they don’t feel confident about and a School Community focus; being a good role model, leadership skills, mentoring others etc. The second half of the year will have a transition to High School focus and of course preparing for Graduation with students involved in action teams.

Transition News
Princes Hill Secondary College has informed us that they are providing tours for year six students who may be interested in attending this High School in 2016. These tours will operate on Wednesdays and Thursdays in Term One. The tours begin at 9.00am and it is essential to book in. The phone no. is 9389 0600.
